In 2002 a Virtues programme was introduced to Pukekohe Hill School. Virtues have been described as the life skills of character and a means for schools to be safe and caring place. Virtues are promoted in class at assemblies and through newsletters.

Honesty.

Being Honest is being open, trustworthy and truthful.
  • Say what you mean and mean what you say
  • Make promises you can keep
  • Admit your mistakes
  • Refuse to lie, cheat or steal
  • Tell the truth tactfully
  • Be true to your self and do what you know is right.

Respect.

Respect is caring for and valuing ourselves and others.
We are practicing respect when we:

  • Speak courteously to everyone
  • Take special care of other people's belongings
  • Honour the rules of our family, school and country
  • Treat others as you want to be treated
  • Expect respect for our body and rights

Self Discipline.

Self Discipline means self control.
We are showing self discipline when:

  • We speak and act calmly when we are hurt or angry
  • We get things done in an orderly efficient way
  • We create routines for ourselves
  • We do what is expected without people having to watch over us
  • We do things on time

Enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm is being inspired and full of spirit.
It is being cheerful and happy. It is being excited about something, looking forward to it.

  • Smile, laugh and enjoy what we do
  • Do things wholeheartedly

Responsibility.

Responsibility means others can depend on you. You are accountable for your actions.
When you make a mistake you fix it and you give your best to any job.

Consideration

Consideration is being kind and thoughtful about other people and their feelings.
It is thinking about how your actions will a
ffect them and caring about how they will feel.

  • Consider other's needs as important as your own
  • Stop and think about how our actions will affect others
  • Put yourself in other people's shoes
  • Think of little things to bring others happiness

Co-Operation

Co-operation is working together with a willingness to respect others and to follow rules.
It is joining in with others to do something that might be difficult to do alone.
We show co-operation when we:

  • Work together but respect others feelings
  • Never be afraid to ask for help if you find something difficult to do on your own.
  • Respect other feelings.
Forgiveness
Forgiveness is giving someone another chance when they have done something wrong, and knowing that everyone makes mistakes.
We show forgiveness when we:

  • Accept people without criticism
  • Take responsibility for our own mistakes
  • Giving someone another chance when they do something wrong.

Friendliness

Friendliness is being a friend, taking an interest in other people and going out of our way to make others feel welcome or to make a stranger to feel at home.
We show friendliness when we:

  • Smile and greet people
  • Get to know someone and let them get to know us
  • Show an interest in others
  • We are caring when a friend needs us
  • We are friendly to people who look and act differently
  • Help others
  • Make others feel welcome
  • Notice when others need a friend and offer friendship

Helpfulness

Helpfulness is being of service.
It is doing useful things for people, such as things they cannot do for themselves,
or they do not have time to do or just little things to make life easier.
It is important to be helpful to ourselves too.

We are showing helpfulness when we:
  • Notice when someone needs help and help them.
  • Do a sevice without being asked.
  • Listen to someone who needs to talk.
  • Care for our own needs.
  • Ask for help when we need it.

Peacefulness

Peacefulness is an inner sense of calm. It is getting very quiet and looking at things so you
can understand them. It is being fair to others and yourself

We are showing Peacefulness when we:
  • Use peaceful language when we are angry
  • Speak gently and respectfully
  • Avoid harming anyone
  • Find peaceful solutions to problems
  • Appreciate differences

Patience

Patience is being calm and tolerant when things are difficult, it is quiet hope and trust
that things will turn out right.

Tolerance
Tolerance is to accept differences. It is knowing that other people have feelings, needs,
hopes and dreams.

Commitment

Commitment is a willingness to give your all to a friendship, task or something you believe in.

Orderliness

Orderliness is being neat and living with a sense of harmony.
It is being organised and having a place for things when you need them.
It is planning something so that it works, doing it step by step instead of going around in circles.

  • have a plan before beginning a job
  • solve problems step by step
  • appreciate the beauty and order of nature

Unity

Unity helps people work and live together peacefully.

Flexibility

Flexibility is being open to change
